backCastle Herrenchiemsee
Conceived as the “Bavarian Versailles”, Herrenchiemsee Castle surpasses its French model in several ways. In 1878 King Ludwig II gave the order for the castle to be built on the island “Herrenchiemsee” in lake “Chiemsee”. However, construction had to be ceased in 1885 due to financial problems. Kind Ludwig’s death in 1886 brought the project to complete termination. Although nothing but an empty building, the castle and its enormous dimensions are an impressive symbol of “Ludwig the Mad’s” eccentricity. Herrenchiemsee’s centre piece, the almost 100 metre long “Hall of Mirrors” adorned by 33 glass lustres and 44 chandeliers, is longer than the Versailles original. The King Ludwig II museum is located in part of the unfinished rooms. The castle is surrounded by a French style park with mazes and fountains. See more...
