The “Marienplatz” is Munich’s vibrant city centre. The large square is dominated by the New Town Hall (“Neues Rathaus”) with its world-famous glockenspiel, which chimes at 11 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. in the summer and at 11 a.m. in the winter. Near the Town Hall you find Munich’s oldest church, “Old Peter”. 302 steps lead to the viewing platform from where you have a splendid view over the historical Old Town and, in favourable weather, of the Alps. Only a short way from the Marienplatz is a famous Munich landmark, the “Frauenkirche” (“Cathedral of our Dear Lady”), its two towers crowned by onion-shaped roofs. The impressive church is 109 metres long and 40 metres wide, and has space for up to 20,000 people.
